Bob Munden

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 Butte, Montana, USA Bob Munden, known perhaps equally as a fierce Fast-Draw competitor who was recognized by Guinness World Records as The Fastest Man with a Gun Who Ever Lived, as an exhibition shooter of the highest order with handguns, rifles and shotguns and, as an entertainer and master gunsmith who developed groundbreaking methods of customizing to perfection the beloved .45 caliber single-action revolver and other guns, died Monday of a heart attack. Munden’s wife and performance partner Becky said today she was driving home from Missoula with Bob last night after his treatment at a Missoula hospital for what doctors described as a mild heart attack. At some point between Missoula and their home in Butte, Bob mentioned he was experiencing chest pains, told Becky to keep on driving, and died. The 70-year-old shooting sports superstar was pronounced dead upon arrival at St. James Heathcare in Butte. Born February 8, 1942 in Kansas City, Mo, Bob began his professional shooting career at age 11 in the mountain community of Big Bear Lake, Calif. While still in high school, Bob placed 2nd in a competition known as the Leatherslap. After years of competing in Fast Draw, Bob and Becky performed together beginning in 1968, emphasizing the importance of gun safety when they went on tour in 1969 for the National School Assembly Program. Depending on the venue, Bob and Becky continued to perform together shooting blanks or with live ammunition across the United States, in New Zealand and London, England. As recently as 2011 the Mundens put on their live-ammunition exhibition at locations in California and Kansas. Over the years Bob, often with Becky who is also a champion shooter, appeared on many television shows, most famously American Shooter, Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Shooting USA, and Shooting USA’s Impossible Shots. Bob Munden can be found all over YouTube and appears in entertaining and instructional DVDs including Bob Munden: Outrageous Shooting and Bob Munden: The Collector’s Edition. At age 68 Munden appeared on Stan Lee’s Superhumans on the History Channel. The repeating episode includes a scientist reporting that Munden’s hand withstands 10 Gs of force when he draws and fires his gun from the holster. Viewers learn that as a comparison, jet pilots are trained to withstand 9 Gs, and that Bob is “faster than a rattlesnake.” In a demo during the same show, Munden draws and shoots two balloons six feet apart with two shots that sound virtually like one. Just eight weeks ago today, at the Butte Gun Club range for Midland Radio Corporation, Munden did exhibition shooting with a .45 caliber single action and a Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol. Bob Munden & Midland XTC High Definition Action Camera – YouTube sRegistered as members #118 and #119 respectively, Bob and Becky entertained at the annual Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) End of Trail World Championships of Cowboy Action Shooting 30 times. Becky proudly said Bob designed the performances, and that using many types of hand guns and long guns, she and Bob put on the most complex presentation ever offered at an exhibition shooting show. She added that Bob was the sport of Cowboy Action Shooting’s first gunsmith. Becky said, “We had an incredible, memorable life together.” She also said that of all the in-arguably amazing shots Bob achieved during his lifetime of speed shooting, precision shooting and showmanship with handguns, rifles and shotguns, his opening a safety pin with a bullet without damaging the pin; hitting a target 600 yards away using a handgun without a scope, throwing a knife with a bullet — and others all accomplished with handguns and practiced mostly in his imagination rather than at the range, Bob was definite that splitting a playing card in he threw into the air was most difficult. Bob is survived by his wife Becky, his daughters Natalie and Mitzi; grandson Levi, granddaughter Kaycee, his mother; three brothers and a sister; nieces, nephews, friends and millions of fans. According to Bob’s wishes his remains will be cremated. A memorial and celebration of his life is to be scheduled during warmer weather in 2013. A small event for local neighbors and friends will take place in Butte in the near future. Information about both events will be posted here and at the Official Bob Munden Fan Page on Facebook.

    Dear Becky,

When I was searching a passport card, I just found out that Bob has passed and I shed a tear.
Shame on my daily local newspaper and media news because they did not mentioned us about Bob Munden.

I am sure Bob had chatting with lot of Old West Gunfighters up there.

    ( pause…………………………18 minutes later )

I fired 6 with my Colt Single Action Army .45LC revolver into air. (blank ammos)

    Sincerely,

I just learned that Bob has passed, and I shed a tear. About 1975, Bob came in for an interview at WOBM-FM radio in Bayville, NJ. Afterward, he gave us a quick draw demonstration in the parking lot. He drew before I could even start reaching for the gun. I never forgot his speed, his good humor, and his smile. RIP, Bob Munden.

  8. Mike Sanservino

I met Bob a number of years ago at a SHOT Show in Las Vegas and found him to be a genuinely warm and nice guy. The world has lost a truly memorable man and I hope people will continue to appreciate the talents of this man through what has been captured on video over the years.

    RIP Bob.

  9. Roger K.

  10. Joe Mcnay

I just recently got into shooting. The first thing I see after searching fastest gunslingers was Bob Munden I watched the video and was blown away this guy is amazing. Since I was a kid I loved Doc Holliday he was a little boys hero. Then as an adult I see Bob shoot I was unreal like nothing I’ve seen before even in the movies. He along side Doc Holliday is now my hero gunslingers. I was sad to hear he passed away my prayers go to his wife and two daughters and extended family. He truly was amazing.

  11. chester

Mr.Munden has been a hero of mine ever since I the first time I saw his ability, what he could do was amazing. The mindset this country regarding firearms of any kind right now is very negative, but this gentleman set a great example that guns are just a tool,in the right hands can work magic. My sincere condolences to Mrs. Munden and the family. Shame on you heartless people who posted comments that were degrading the a great American who used his talents for all of us to enjoy. Once again Bob Munden will be greatly missed .

  12. ron

YouTobe of Bob Munden–I’m not sure he was the fastest? Someone wrote he drew & shot his gun in: 0.02 <- this is-Two Hundredth of a second-good, But the guy I seen on TV Drew & Shot his gun in 400,hundredth of a second Firing 2 shots & 500 hundredth of a second firing only 1 show & putting it back in his holster.

    1. bobmunden.com

Ron, 0.02 hundredths of a second is faster than the other two times you mentioned. Your description of a shooter making the return of the gun to the holster as part of his draw sounds like Bob Munden. Thanks for stopping by for a visit!

  13. David O.

Bob was truly a legend. I have a small 38 that I had him do an action job on after I met him and saw him perform at a gun show in Nashville TN over 30 years ago. It is one of my most cherished and often carried firearms. This world has lost one of the greats. He will never be forgotten as long as I am around.

sorry to hear of bobs passing …a true showman for the shooting sports …my condolances …

  28. Howard D.

I knew Bob…..and yes, he was an arrogant jerk to make the statement that he was the fastest EVER. We have no real way of knowing just how fast Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, or any of the other greats from the old west really were. Bob, you were fast, but the fastest? Doubt it seriously.

    1. Alan

I doubt any of those mentioned was close in fast draw…They were most surely fast (if they were) “locally” They must of shot like any other, seeking the best chances, hiding behind objects etc. They had to survive all sorts of ambushes and unethical attempts at being killed so the surely worked a similar scheme. I don´t see them practicing hours on end at a range or open country…Sitting ducks there for more than a few who wanted them dead surely. They most probable had more firepower at hand…Shotguns must of been widely used at close quarters… Bob just had a very unique natural gift and perfected it by practice and practice and practice at a range or countryside free from potshots coming in from many that wanted to dispatch him… Had they seen such a performer growing in the old west, surely someone would of shot him by the back or at a distance or whatever just to brag about that feat…I don´t really believe the wild west had a man as fast as Bob was…Because he would probably never get to his or her best before being killed by another…

  29. Jason

Bob has transitioned from a man, to a legend. He will not be forgotten. R.I.P. Bob Munden.

Mrs. Becky, I just found out about Bob’s passing yesterday , and I sincerely send condolences to you and your family. I never met Bob, but I never missed an opportunity to watch him on the T.V. shooting shows.Although Bob and I were of the same generation(I am 67), he reminded me of my Daddy in dress, looks ,and build. My Dad introduced me to the shooting sports when he entrusted a Daisy BB gun to me when I was 3.5 years old.I graduated to a 22 cal. pellet rifle at the age of 5 and my first 22 rifle at 5 also. I related to Bob because of his passion of shooting and I understand because I developed the ability amaze the locals with my shooting. Becky, my Dad passed 15 years ago and I miss him.I can truthfully say I will miss Bob Munden. A friend in Louisiana, Carson Davis

  31. John

    Bob was an arrogant jerk.

  32. Julio lopes

I am very sorry to hear Mr. Munden has passed. I only discovered him after watching Stan Lee’s Superhumans which opened up a new world to me. Mr. Munden was truly a master and nothing was more inspiring than watching his videos and seeing that anything is possible if your willing to put in the work and time to develop a skill. I am saddened to see such a giant in the shooting community pass on. Let all of us follow his example in dedication to excellence and remain ever vigilant in defending out right to bear arms.

  33. joey dillon

Wow, sorry to hear. … a legend. I am lucky to have known him.

  34. John Caldwell

Just heard about Bob’s passing. Years ago I ordered two of his VHS tapes. When they arriveed I found both were the same tape, not the different ones. I called the phone number included. Bob answered the phone!!! He apologized and said he would send the other right out. We talked for over 2 hours!!! We shared stories about riding motorcycles, which we also enjoyed, guns and his carreer. I tried to get him to come to Salinas to do a show during the Calif Rodeo – but it didn’t work out. A great guy, irreplaceable, one of a kind – we’ll miss him.

  35. Mark Gee

Bob, You filled out a pair of off white chinos like no other shooter. I have always been envious of your vast talent. Sleep well cowboy.

I was only made aware of Becky and Bob Munden’s abilities shortly after Mr Munden’s passing. I feel greatly saddened for his wife Becky, and any family in his passing ! I can only say that I marveled at his abilities shown on short internet clips, but with that I spied a few more candid moments caught on only a few others. From his bragging which has been stated being a put on, but didn’t need to be ! He reminded me of my father and his demeanor as I grew to admire. I can only say that seeing Mr. Munden in those short video clips only showed me that some of the most precious things are not here as long as we would like for them to be ! ! ! My Deepest Condolences to all of his Family ! ! ! !

  56. Daniel R.Haines Sr.

  65. Dave Ross

I enjoyed Bob’s expertise through his television work for years before finally getting a chance to meet him in June of 2010, in Overland Park, Kansas at a Cowboy Action event. He and Becky were gracious beyond belief. They insisted on taking photos with me and shared information about their revolvers during an extraordinary visit. I’ll never forget them.

Becky you have my sincere condolences, we share your loss of a real gentleman.

  66. Jim Hollenbeck

Bob and Becky were so kind to me, having only meeting them a few times at exhibitions and gun shows. The three of us spent a few hours sitting in their RV talking about everything from American history to politics to the inner workings of various trigger assembly’s, and of his faith.
He reached out and made me feel like a friend, even for just that short time., He was a magician with a firearm, and craftsmen in the shop, a natural showman and a national treasure.
    RIP Bob Munden.
From my family to Becky and surviving family we send our deepest sympathy, God Bless!

  67. Gerald Nowak

God makes all men, but some times he makes one that stands taller than all, Bob was one of those. As with everthing he did, Bob is just leading us to someplace better. Prayers for Becky and the children.

  68. David Cortez

Hats off to one of the greatest shots of all time and a heck of a guy as well. I hope Becky and the children are doing okay.

  69. Scott Harrison

What a tremendous loss. I enjoyed talking to Bob, Becky, and his daughter at the SASS convention in Las Vegas. Couldn’t have met a nicer gentleman. He always had a positive attitude, even with all of his health problems. Sounded to me that he knew how to raise his kids too. Talked to his daughter and she related many memorable times with her dad. Our prayers are with Becky and her kids. I can’t imagine what they must be going through.

    Peace be with you Bob.

  70. Scott in Reno

    Bob,

God Speed, you will be missed! You were a shining light and role model for firearm sports and citizenship.

    Scott

  71. Jeff Lundquist

What an amazing man Bob was! His friendship with my parents brought him to our home several times as I was growing up. I will never forget him doing a demonstration in our living room. He blew apart 2 styrofoam cups shooting blanks and I was amazed that I never really saw him draw his gun it was so fast. Just a fantastic and friendly guy that anyone who knew him will miss. Rest in peace Bob Munden.

  72. Russell Bradford

Mr. Munden was Avery kind man and for the time I knew him.well talked to him on the phone..he always helped me and I did as he said ..I will miss him and he done a race gun for me and I’ll always remember him…God Bless…and mrs. Munden was also a great help…

  73. Don & Max Lundquist

Rest in pease, Bob our friend. The friendship that we considered a privilege with Bob, Becky & the girls over the years will always be a treasure in our hearts. Right now, our hearts are breaking for Becky & the girls as we know how much this loss is hurthing them. Life will go on but it will never be the same. This sad news will make us reflect on our friendship which started when we first met over 40 years ago and to appreciate the many wonderful times that we shared. Natalie, Mitzi & our daughter Kris also became instant friends as 6,7 & 8 year olds will do. When I advise Kris of this sad day in all of our lives I know just how crushed she will be as well. There is no way to express our sadness over the loss that we share.
Our Love to you & the girls,
    Don
Becky, I know how sad you must be, because we feel the same. You two were one, and you will miss him greatly. I love you and pray for you and think of you with fondness and love very often. We also remember all the good times we had, and I thank God for your friendship. My heart goes out to you and the girls. Love, Max

I saw Bob on YouTube. I thought it was fake. I recently had bought a ruger n. vaquero and was considering fast draw. After awhile of studying him,I was in aww of him. Like kids are with a rock star . Finally I called him. He talked to me like I was his friend. I couldn’t believe it, I kept going on about how great he was and he took the time to talk to me . I wish had sent my gun then to have him work on it. I couldn’t really afford it then.
I never meant him or saw him perform but feel luck
….the fastest gun that ever lived…talked to me. Jake.

The first and only time I ever met Bob Munden was at the Memorial service for Col. Jeff Cooper, at the Whittington NRA Center in Raton, NM. They asked if any of the “Old Guard” from the original Bear Valley Gunslingers Leatherslap competitions were in attendance that day, and rather than make a big deal and detract from the proceedings, Bob just sat there until someone else raised their hand and pointed him out to everyone. He quickly stood up, raised his hand in acknowledgment, then sat back down. I had the opportunity to talk with Mr Munden for a short time right after that, and we took a picture together, which I kept in my office until I left that establishment.

Despite the “Bragging act” which he put on as part of his shows, I found him to be a quiet, humble and genuinely nice man, who took time to speak with so many of his admirers that day. When i arrived home after the Memorial service, I found a package waiting for me with an autographed picture of Bob, signed with a nice inscription to me, by name, mentioning our meeting at Whittington. The package also had a nice note inside from Becky, (Mrs. Munden), with whom I also had the honor of speaking briefly.

Everyone I speak with who knew them, says that the Mundens were always just genuinely nice, regular “folks”. I found that to be so, and I wish Mrs Munden God’s love and comfort at this very sad time. I wish she were here so I could give her a hug, but I’m absolutely certain that she is right now receiving well-wishes from hundreds and hundreds of people all over the nation.. The world has lost an unbelievable talent, and more importantly, a fine gentleman and good person.
RIP Mr. Munden – and show Elmer Keith, Jeff Cooper, Ed McGivern, Bill Jordan, Herb Parsons, and all the other great gun handlers up there with you in Valhalla, just “How its done!”

  129. Bruce
